Mary McGee b 23 Nov 1817 in Jefferson Co. AL d. abt. 1865 Burleson County, Texas, was the firstborn child of Ralph and Lydia Cude McGee. She married James Buchanan in Jefferson County Alabama in 1833. James was the son of William Buchanan. Their children were William Buchanan b.1834, and James Houston Buchanan b.1836. Mary, James, and her parents moved to Texas in 1834 as colonists of Stephen F. Austin. The Birch Cemetery is located on James and Mary's Mexican land grant of one league of land. James Buchanan died at the Battle of the Alamo March 6, 1836. After the Battle of the Alamo, Mary and her son William, fled from Santa Anna's Army in what is known as the "Runaway Scrape". Her son James Houston was born in April. Mary married John W. Overby, October 25, 1838 in Montgomery Co.,Texas. Their children were Ann Elizabeth Overby 1839, Benjamin Overby 1841, Emma Adeline Overby Sept. 1843. Emma Adeline married John Flippen on May 14, 1858 in Caldwell, TX. John Flippen was a Pvt. in 20th Texas Inf.CSA, Henry Elmore's Regt., and he served as a gunsmith and machinist at Galveston Texas. John and Emma are the parents of William Benjamin Flippen. Ralph McGee fought at the Battle and Seige of Bexar. Ralph's father was David McGee, a soldier in the American Revolutionary War. David was at Valley Forge PA with General George Washington. Mary was indeed a very brave and courageous Texas pioneer. Her memory is so very dear to me. Mary is my Daughter of The Republic of Texas ancestor. NLGC Nancy Lou Glenn Clampitt (Cherokee Rose)
