Obituary of Marcus Holmes
From The Monroe; Rochester, New York

MARCUS HOLMES died suddenly on the evening of the 19th inst., at his residence in Rochester, in the 63rd year of his age. Mr. HOLMES was generally known in Rochester by the older residents of the city, as he had resided here many years. None knew him but to respect him for his gentle and quiet manners, his integrity in his business, his unobtrusive benevolence, and his sincere, deep-toned and abiding religious feelings and character. Few men die at his time of life, leaving so good a name behind them, as MARCUS HOLMES.

Mr. HOLMES had been for many years, and was at the time of his death, a Ruling Elder in the First Presbyterian Church in Rochester, and his loss there will be deeply felt and sincerely mourned. Many will long remember his deep, earnest and tender manner of supplicating the Throne of Grace on behalf of sinful men, and few who came under the influence of his personal acquaintance, will soon forget how sincerely and affectionately he commended CHRIST to them, as an all-sufficient Savior and friend.

The writer of this knew him well and long, but cannot remember the time when he was not living a life of faith, and prayer, and self denial, and deadness to the world, and of close walk with God. But the poor will weep most at the death of Mr. HOLMES. His sympathies were most with them; he used to love to go and mingle his tears and prayers with those who have fewest friends to visit and aid them. But he has departed from amongst us suddenly - as it were in the twinkling of an eye. On the morning of Tuesday he arose perfectly well and in the evening he was not, for GOD had taken him. "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth; yea saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors, and their works do follow them."

(It is not proved that the grave of Seth Holmes b. unknown, d. unknown located in Knoxboro-Augusta Cemetery, Augusta, Oneida County, New York is the grave of Seth Holmes, husband of Phebe Grant and father of Marcus Holmes. I, Susan Burgess (FAG contributor #47528859) believe the grave is his but it is just my conjecture.)
