Cora Roberta Mynekia Shelton Gibson Cecil was the last of the children of Joseph "Joe" and Margaret Lee Shelton. Cora had 22 siblings including Clarence Shelton.
Long before Cora had any other job, she used to take whatever we had extra of such as Milk, butter, eggs, green beans and so on to the mining camps to sell and it was referred to as "Peddling". She would go to Anchor and Tway, which was across the hill from our home. After Anchor and Tway closed in the late 1930s, Cora would go to Warren which was also over the hill in a different direction. Once in a while she would go to Kay Jay. During WWII Cora worked at Cadillac making parts for airplanes. When the war was over and the service men came back they got their jobs back, and the ones who had worked during the war were laid off as Cadillac began making cars again. Cora's next job was at a bakery. During the late 1940s, she worked at the Bain Drive-In at Barbourville and then at the Delux Laundry and Dry Cleaners, which was next door to the drive-in, and those spaces are now filled by the East Barbourville Baptist Church.
Cora was not officially a Mid Wife. However, Cora sure delivered quite a few babies. Oftentimes Cora would be along with her sisters-in-law or neighbors, would be at the expectant parents home when the baby decided to arrive before the doctor arrived.
Cora's husband, Travis Gibson, died in 1951 of Brain Tumor. In 1957, Cora married Hobert Cecil. Before she married Hobert, she worked for Evelyn and Ed Goins at the well known "Jacks" restaurant in Barbourville, Kentucky. by daughter Hazel.
