Richard Heuberger
Birth: Jun. 18, 1850
Death: Oct. 28, 1914

Composer, Critic. His operetta "Der Opernball" ("The Opera Ball", 1898) is a classic of the Viennese repertory. Its waltz duet "Im Chambre séparée" is still a popular recital piece; Fritz Kreisler transcribed it for solo violin under the title "Midnight Bells". The complete operetta was filmed twice, in 1939 and 1956. Heuberger was born in Graz, Austria. At 26 he abandoned an engineering degree to pursue music, studying composition with W.A. Remy and Robert Fuchs, and as a conductor of several choral societies. In 1881 he ventured into journalism and in 1896 he succeeded the powerful Eduard Hanslick as chief music critic of Vienna's "Neue frei Presse". He became editor of the "Neue Musikalische Presse" in 1904. In addition he taught conducting at the Vienna Conservatory, wrote a biography of Franz Schubert (1902), and collected his reviews in several published volumes. "The Opera Ball" was Heuberger's first and only success as a composer; he went on to write five more operettas, as well as operas, ballets, and orchestral music, but nothing else like it emerged from his pen. Trivia note: Heuberger was originally commissioned to set the Viktor Leon-Leo Stein libretto for "The Merry Widow", but he found the subject uninspiring and in 1905 it was finally reassigned to a newcomer, Franz Lehar. The rest was operetta history. (bio by: Bobb Edwards)
