Funeral services for Martha Lott, 99, of Portales, will be at 10:00 AM, Monday, August 10, 2009, at the Emmanuel Baptist Church with Rev. Walter Huber officiating.� Burial will follow in the Mt. Zion Cemetery near Dora with Jim Bob Wall, Jimmy Roberts, Steve Collins, Greg Lott, Houston Wall, Tom Burris, Clovis Gray and Jack Manis serving as pallbearers.� Her church family will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Martha Lott was born July 4, 1910, in Dora to May and Fred Hodges and died at her home in Portales on August 7, 2009.� She grew up on the family farm southeast of Dora and attended school in Dora and later at Richland.� However, the school only went through the eleventh grade, so she went to live with an aunt and uncle in Pawnee, OK, to finish school.� She graduated from high school in 1928, and attended a summer session to get a teaching certificate.�
The next fall Martha began teaching at Dora where she taught the sixth grade along with high school Spanish, English and the first Home Economics class offered in Dora.� She taught in Dora for 10 years, attending summer sessions in Silver City and Las Vegas, NM, and Canyon and Lubbock, TX, as well as at Eastern New Mexico Junior College in Portales.� In the fall of 1938, she decided to go back to school and complete a degree in Home Economics at State University in Las Cruces, and graduated in 1941.� She then taught Home Ec in Melrose for a year, and then in Hiway for a year.�
On May 23, 1943 in Elida, she was married to Emmitt Houston Lott.� They made their home on a farm near Dora. Following her husband's death in 1970, Mrs. Lott moved to Portales to make her home.� She had a very busy life in Portales.� Martha was very active in the Emmanuel Baptist Church where she served as Church Treasurer for more than 20 years.� She enjoyed fishing, sewing and crocheting, canning and freezing vegetables, doing yard work and tending to her house plants.� Mrs. Lott and her sister made very pretty beaded jewelry.� She always liked visiting with her friends and relatives in person or by phone.�� In addition, Martha was a crossword puzzle "nut."
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Tatiana Lott of Portales; her daughter, Frances Wall of Portales; four grandchildren, Jim Bob Wall of Dora, Greg H. Lott of Dallas, TX, Houston R. Wall of Dora, and Karina Osipova of Siberia, Russia; three great-grandchildren, Austin Lee Wall, Christina Osipova and Gleb Osipov; and a sister, Frances Burris of Portales.�
She was preceded in death by both of her parents, and by her husband, Emmitt who died April 5, 1970.
