Clary Ray was a European trained artist with a studio at 1700 Pennsylvania Avenue. He was the first of three artists to create paintings of ships for use in the documentary series Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies in the War of the Rebellion. Many of his works can be found in the Navy Art Collection in Washington, D.C.
