LAWRENCE "Larry" EUGENE CLARK, SR., 78, passed away August 6, 2009 at his home in Memphis after a long illness attended by his wife Shelby Jean Clark, his son, Michael Clark and his granddaughter, Lauren Clark. Larry, as he was known to his friends, and "Papaw" to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, was born on September 17, 1930 in Mars Hill, Maine. He was the son of a potato farmer and always dreamed of going back to Maine to farm. He came to the Mid South as a Marine during the Korean War and was stationed at the Naval Base in Millington, Tennessee. From his time attached to the Air Wing of the USMC, he acquired his lifelong love of airplanes. After his discharge from the Marines in 1955, he entered the work force in sales. His spent his early days selling cemetery plots and life insurance. From there he became a Circulation Manager for the Memphis Press Scimitar. Before he retired he was involved in several business ventures. After retirement, one of his favorite pastimes was drinking coffee with the "boys', rehashing old war stories and talking politics. He was of the Baptist faith and a member of Leaclair Baptist Church. The fourth of nine children, he was preceded in death by his father, Harry Milford Clark and his mother, Glenna Tweedie Clark, his brothers Wendell Clark and Dean Clark. He is survived by Merrill Clark (Patsy) of Portland, OR, Maurice Clark (Sandra) of Brunswick, ME, Dorothy Bridges (Humphrey) of Waterbury, CT, Marvin Clark (Jean) of Blairsville, GA, Eloise McDowell (Mac) and Carolyn Doak, all of Enfield, CT. Larry was most proud of his 5 children, his 15 grandchildren and his 7 great-grandchildren. He also was proud to know that there were to be 3 more great-grandchildren not yet born. In addition to his wife, Shelby Jean Clark, he leaves behind daughters, Debbie Roper (Randall) of Germantown, TN and Mitzi Rychlik (Chris) of Senatobia, MS, and sons, Lawrence (Larry) E. Clark, Jr (Terri) of Knoxville, TN, Michael Clark (Jeanne) of O'Fallon, MO and Stephen Clark (Cathie) of Hendersonville, TN. Visitation will be held Sunday, August 9, 2009 from 3-5 PM at Bartlett Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 11 AM also at Bartlett Funeral home, with a private burial at West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery on Wednesday, August 12, 2009.
