One by one, the men and women who in the early 70's broke ground for civilization in Howard county and have devoted the strength of their lives to its upbuilding are going to their eternal rest. We have this week to chronicle the death of two of these loyal veterans in the service of peace and progress. They were both of the very earliest settlers in the westren part of Howard county.
[Obit of Hans F. Hankins followed]
Niels Eriksen, another of the old heroes of the van of civilization in this county died on his homestead in this county, two miles west of Nysted Sunday evening. Here he had lived for twenty-five years, and made the farm a model one,and he and his wife and family have been models of industry.
Mr. Eriksen reached the ripe old age of 73. He was the father of Peter Eriksen of Brewster, Blaine county, and Mrs. J. G. Schlytern and Editor Eriksen of Dannebrog. The immense funeral procession, numbering about four hundred people, showed the general esteem in which this old pioneer was held.
