Mary James was born in 1822 to unknown parents in North Carolina. Mary married Solomon James Hawkins in Stokes Co., N.C. From the marriage collection of Stokes Co., NC., it was learned that she married Solomon Hawkins on 7 Feb 1845. These records are now at County Court, Danbury NC. Soon after their marriage they moved to Smith Co. Virginia where she gave birth to seven known chilldren. They were Elizabeth Jane Hawkins 1846–1926; William Franklin Hawkins 1848–1945; Ruffus J. Hawkins 1850–1884; Lizzie Hawkins 1851–1910; Samuel Alex C. Hawkins 1854–1939; Noah W. Hawkins 1859–1921; John W. Hawkins 1860; and Minerva "Nerve" Hawkins 1862–1938. On Oct. 10 1846, Mary and Solomon Hawkins were received by, Experience and Baptism, into the Membership of the St. Clair's Bottom Church. Soon after her last child, Minerva was born, the family relocated in Lee Valley, Hawkins Co. Tennessee. Some time after her 48th birthday in 1870, she passed away, and was buried in the Lee Valley Cemetery. (bio by Audrey DeCamp Hoffman)
