Artist's Model. She was the niece, frequent traveling companion, and favourite subject of legendary portraitist John Singer Sargent. Raised in England by a well-off family, she began posing for her uncle's work at a young age as had her mother Violet before her. Left a widow after her husband scholar Robert Andre-Michel, with whom she had done research at the Vatican prior to World War I, was killed-in-action in 1914, she devoted the war years to work as a volunteer nurse at a hospital for blinded soldiers in Reuilly and was killed along with 92 others in a German bombardment while attending a concert following the Tenebrae service at the Church of St. Gervais, Paris, on Good Friday 1918. Following her death Sargent devoted himself to creating art for the Allied cause. Today Rose-Marie's image can be seen in a number of major galleries, with the most famous picture, 1911's "Repose", on permanent display in Washington's National Gallery of Art. (bio by: Bob Hufford)
