While moving to Illinois, Jacob Bruner died of the "Milk Sickness".
In 1834, Peter Swink, a young man, proposed marriage to the widow Maria Beghtol Bruner. She felt that the support of a wife and four children would be too much of a burden for a youn man starting out in life and declined the offer. Later, her father, Peter Beghtol, offered to help them get settled financially, and she accepted.
There were three children born to this union: Martha Jane, George Swink and Maria Elizabeth.
