Alice Baker
Martha Alice BAKER, 46, Rochester businesswoman and prominent in women's activities of the city, died at 10 p.m. Sunday at Woodlawn hospital, where she had been a patient since Wednesday. Death was due to multiple carcinoma.
Mrs. Baker, 330 West 12th street, had been in failing health for several weeks. She had been actively associated in the operation of Baker's Hardware here.
Mrs. Baker was serving as first vice president of the Rochester Woman's club at the time of her death and also was first vice president of the 13th District of Indiana Federated Clubs. She also was active in the work of the Chamber of Commerce, American Legion Auxiliary, National Federation of Republican Women and the Grace Methodist church, of which she was a member.
She also was present Worthy Matron of Eastern Star Lodge No. 70, belonging to the Bethel Shrine No. 26, and was Past Noble Grand and Past District Deputy of Evergreen Rebekah Lodge No. 57.
Born Jan. 29, 1916, at Rochester, she was the daughter of Reuben K. GILLILAND and Mrs. John (Edith UNGER) INMAN. She was married June 26, 1937, at Rochester, to Lyman E. BAKER, who survives, and had spent her life in this community.
Also surviving are one sister, Mrs. DeVerle (Mary) CARR, and one brother, Geiger GILLILAND, both of Rochester; and numerous nieces and nephews, including Mrs. Richard McKEE and Richard GILLILAND, both of Rochester.
Funeral rites will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Grace Methodist church with the Rev. Ray E. MILLS officiating. Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. cemetery. Friends may call at the Zimmerman Brothers funeral home after 1 p.m. Tuesday. The Eastern Star lodge will give its service at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home, followed by rites of the Evergreen Rebekah lodge at 8 p.m.
