William W. Winans "Yogi", 84, of Belmont, New Hampshire formerly of Wall Township died on July 22, 2009 at Mountainside Hospital in Montclair with his loving family by his side. Born and raised in the Bailey's Corner section of Wall Township he was a graduate of the Manasquan High School Class of 1943. Following his graduation Mr. Winans worked on the Birdsall Farm in Wall Township before joining the Army in 1944 where he served as a Technician with Company One 34th infantry Regiment. During his service time he was awarded Army of Occupation Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the Philippines Liberation Ribbon, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. Following his discharge from the Army he was employed as a Postal Worker with the Belmar Post Office until his retirement in 1972. Mr. Winans was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons Ocean Lodge 89 of Spring Lake Heights for 59 years. In 1996 he moved to New Hampshire where he worked in the Maintenance Department at the New Hampton School before retiring in 2004.
Predeceased by his Parents Roger Hudson Winans and Margaret Debow Jewell Winans, his beloved wife of 52 years Marilyn Mueller Winans, his loving son Thomas Winans, and dear sisters Millicent Winans and Ruth Gratton. Surviving him are his loving children Elizabeth Fusco of Bloomfield, Bonnie Martin and her husband Ron of New Hampshire, and Julie Winans of Georgia. He is also survived by his sisters Rachel (Betsy) Thompson and her husband John, Gertrude Winans, Margaret Plath, and his brother Jonathan Winans and his wife Virginia, his brother in-law Walter Gratton, sister-in-law Karen and her husband Derek, and daughter-in-law Marilyn G. Winans of Vermont. Also surviving are his very special grandchildren Sarah, Ruth, and Rachel along with many caring nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Sunday 2-6 pm at the Johnson McGinley Funeral Home 2652 Highway 138 Wall Township adjacent to the Rt. 18 north entrance. The Masons from Ocean Lodge 89 will conduct a service during the afternoon. On Monday services will held from the funeral home at 10:00 am followed by a Funeral Service at 11:00 am at the Calvary Baptist Church 13th Avenue and E Street in Belmar with Reverend Grace Scarle officiating. Burial with Military Honors to follow at Monmouth Memorial Park Rt. 33 West Tinton Falls.
