Son of William and Mary Campbell Graham. Campbell's military and professional record is as follows :
July 1, 1822 graduated from West Point (9/40) and appointed brevet 2ndlt. and 2ndlt., 3rd U. S. Artillery Rgt. Sept. 11, 1828 1stlt. 1835-1836 Florida Indian war; Dec. 31, 1835 brevet capt., U. S. Army for affair on the Withlacoochee, Fla. where twice wounded; Nov. 23, 1837 brevet capt., assistant topographical engineer; July 7, 1838 capt., topographical engineers; 1839-1852 superintending topographical engineer of surveys and improvements in various states; 1847-1849 paved Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, D. C. 1854-1855 inspector of Pacific coast lighthouses; 1855-1856 on the staff of commanding general of Department of the Pacific; Dec. 9, 1857 maj. Sept. 9, 1861 retired for disability.
