Bennington Civil War Veteran Dies at Nantic, Conn.

C. M. Lambert, a veteran of the civil war who had been a resident of Bennington for 40 years, died Thursday morning at the home of his brother-in-law, W. E. Smith, at Niantic, Conn. Mr. and Mrs. Lambert as had been their custom for many years, left here late in July to pass a portion of the summer at Niantic. Mr. Lambert was taken ill August 17. He made a partial recovery and had planned to return to Bennington but his departure was delayed by the strike on the Connecticut trolley lines. When service was resumed he had become so feeble that removal was not considered advisable. His son, Ernest L. Lambert, received a telegram Wednesday night stating that the father's condition was critical. Mr. and Mrs. E.L. Lambert left at once for Niantic, but did not arrive until after the older man had passed away.

Cornelius M. Lambert was born at Cambridge, N.Y., and passed his 76th birthday anniversary on July 5 last. During his life he had confined himself to one line of business, the sale and manufacture of monuments. For a number of years he was a traveling salesman for Miller & Luce and continued in the service of the firm after locating in Bennington. In this village he was associated with the late Judson Loomis. He purchased the interest of his partner and was later associated with his son under the firm name of C.M. Lambert & Son. Concrete contracting was added to the monument business, but this department has since been sold to M.J. Burrington, Jr.

The deceased was a thorough American, a conscientious citizen and was universally respected in the community with which he had been so long identified. The family survivors are a widow who was Sarah Smith of Niantic, Conn., and one son.

The funeral will be held from his late residence on School street at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon. Rev. J. Elmer McKee, rector at St. Peter's church, will officiate and interment will be at Park Lawn cemetery. The Masons will have charge of the service at the grave.
