At the age of 4 or 5 she came down with Scarlett Fever and lost her hearing. She attended the Clarke School for the Deaf in Northampton, Massachusetts in 1867. Alexander Graham Bell came to the school as a speech teacher and a courtship began and they married in 1877. Early in January 1923, Mabel Bell died at her daughter Daisy's Maryland home. Her ashes were interred in Alec's grave on August 7. Following her wishes, the time chosen was 5:00 p.m., the hour when for years she had joined Alec at the Laboratory to bring him home to the family.
