At the age of 61, David Sumner served as a private in Capt Theophilus Lyon's Co during the Revolutionary War. He enlisted March 17,1778 and served 20 days, during which the company marched to Castle Island under the command of Lieut Col Samuel Peirce.

He married Mary Esty (1736-1821) 21 Nov 1776 in Stoughton, MA. They had one child together, daughter Mercy Sumner born 10 Aug 1777.
