He was born January 11, 1910, the son of Ferdinand and Regina Sudbeck Holthaus, on a farm south of Seneca, the Holthaus family homestead. He attended Old Lincoln School, Sts. Peter and Paul School in Seneca, and helped on the family farm.
In 1936, he moved to Cashmeir, WA, where he worked at a fruit from for two years before returning to Seneca. He bought a gravel truck, and hauled gravel for roads, and also hauled corn.
On October 5, 1940, he married Twila Glancy at Marysville, KS. She survives.
The couple lived in Savannah, MO, where he drove a truck for several years. They moved to Centralia, KS, in 1942, where he was a farmer and continued trucking. They lived and farmed north of Centralia and north of Goff before returning to Centralia in the early 1950's. Besides his gravel truck business, he sold brushes for New Art Cleaners and vacumn cleaners for Rex Air Co., for three years. He owned and operated a liquor store in Centralia from the early 1950's until he sold in 1980. They moved to Seneca in 1981.
He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Seneca, the St. Joseph Society at the church; a member of the Centralia Lion's Club and an hononary lifetime member of the Centralia Jaycees for outstanding community service.
He enjoyed playing cards, gardening, fishing and hunting. He especially loved to duck hunt with his friends.
Besides his wife, he is survived by son, Bernard Paul Holthaus, II, Lecompton, KS; daughters, Ann Stevenson, Topeka, KS; Joan Bauer, Enid, OK; brother, Fritz Holthaus, Seneca, KS; sister, Rita Becker, Gladstone, MO; six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant twin daughters, Mary Jane and Martha Jean Holthaus in 1950; brothers, Walter Holthaus, Albert Holthaus, Joseph Holthaus, Barney Holthaus, Henry Holthaus; sisters, Rita Holthaus, Matilda Haverkamp, and Lucia Roth.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Seneca, KS. Burial was in the church cemetery.
