Birth: 1685
Norfolk County
Massachusetts, USA
Death: Jun. 22, 1759
Norfolk County
Massachusetts, USA

Robert Field 3rd, s. of Robert Field Jr. and Mary Chenery (q.v. Chinery), bapt. Apr. 8, 1688 at Braintree, Mass. He d. June 22, 1759 at Milton, Mass., 74.

Robert's parents m. of record at Braintree in October 1680. While Robert's actual date of birth cannot be found, at his recorded baptism at Braintree he is listed as "Robert, Joseph and Mary, children of Robert Feild." An older sister Mary b. of record at Braintree Aug. 30, 1681 died one month later with a second child named Mary b. after the first Mary's death. The method of recording multiple siblings baptised on the same date in the Congregational Chh. was either i) first the sons in descending age order followed by the daus., or ii) regardless of gender the children in descending age order. Thus, Robert is the eldest known son b. after Aug. 1681. His gravestone says he was b. within the one year period that began June 23, 1685.

On June 1, 1710 at Dorchester, Mass., Robert m. Anna Foster, dau. of Lieut. James Foster and Anna Lane, b. Jan 27, 1684/5 at Dorchester. She d. of record at Dorchester Nov. 13, 1728, 44, but is interred at adjoining Milton, Mass. They had eight recorded children: Mary (Field) Vose, Anna (Field) Atherton, Joseph, Ebenezer, Mehitable (d.y.), followed by sons Robert, James, and Hopestill.

On May 21, 1730 at Dorchester, Mass., Robert m. 2) Hannah Vose, the dau. of Thomas Vose, Jr. and Hannah Badcock, b. Feb. 27, 1700 at Milton. She was the older sister of Jonathan, the husb. of Robert's eldest dau. Mary. Hannah d. childless Sept. 13, 1769 at Milton.

An abstract of the Will of Robert Field of Milton, comber, dated June 20, 1759, proved July 13, 1759, is:

To wife Hannah
An undivided 1/6 share of his lands at Phillip town at the eastward individually to:
The chldrn. of son Joseph late of Boston, dec'd.
The heirs of son Ebenezer late of Boston, dec'd.
Son Robert.
Son James.
Dau. Mary Vose [wife of Jonathan Vose of Milton, the brother of Robert's widow Hannah].
The heirs of dau. Anna Atherton of Dorchester.
Son Robert Field of Western, executor.

Of specific note, in NEHGR 7 (Jan. 1853):92 Robert's gravestone inscription is errantly transcribed as:

"Here lyes ye Body of Mr. Robert Field who died June 23d 1752 in ye 74th year of his age"

He actually died per his gravestone in 1759, not 1752. Due to this transciption error, the Field Genealogy (1901, vol. 2, p. 955) claimed that Robert was b. in circa 1678 two years before his parent's married in October 1680. This prompted the author of the Field Geneal. to give Robert's father an unknown 1st wife before his only known wife, Mary Chenery.
