The son of Heinrich W. Johnes and Friederike "Rachael" Schaper, Henry was baptized "Herman Heinrich Friedrich Johnes" on 19 Oct 1856 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in St. Louis, Missouri. His sponsors were listed in church records as Fritz Blacke and Dietrich Pordne, although the spelling of those names is questionable.

His parents soon moved the family to southern Calhoun County, Illinois. Henry's father helped establish St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Brussels, Illinois in 1861.

Henry married Charlotte "Lottie" Kinder on 23 Oct 1879 in Brussels. They were the parents of 4 children.

Lottie died in 1888.

Children from first marriage: 2 sons, 2 daughters.

After Lottie's death, Henry married Louisa Haubs on 05 Nov 1889 in Calhoun County. They were the parents of 7 children.

Children from second marriage: 3 daughters, 2 sons, 2 unknown.

At the time of his death, Henry was 56 years, 7 months and 15 days old. He was survived by his second wife, Louisa, who passed away in 1928.
