JAMES HART. JAMES COMES IN HONOR OF HIS FATHER, JAMES FLETCHER SNIPES. THE NAME HART COMES IN HONOR OF THE DOCTOR WHO DELIVERED HIM "AT HOME" IN RURAL MONTAGUE CO., TEXAS. HE DIED AT RON AND MARY'S HOME ON 1405 JEFFERSON ST. IN BASTROP, TEXAS. HIS RETIRED PASTOR FROM SOUTH SIDE BAPTIST CHURCH IN WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS, BROTHER WOOD CONDUCTED HIS FUNERAL SERVICE.
James was a deacon and Sunday school teacher at the South Side Baptist Church for 25 years when they lived in Wichita Falls, Texas.

The Snipes family was living in Montague Co. Texas. in the early 1900s One day James's sisters Maggie and Nettie were at a creek with their mother and brother James Hart Snipes. Maggie was 13, Nettie was 11 and James was 6. The girls responsibility was to watch their brother while mother Fannie washed clothes. James was fishing and lost his fishing pole in the water.

Nettie, the younger sister, trying to get the pole fell into the creek and began to drown. Maggie the older sister jumped in to save her and also began to drown. There was a lot of screaming and Fannie went immediately to find out what was going on. Fannie jumped in to rescue the girls. The father ,James Fletcher, who was plowing in the field, came running to help. He was hot and sweating so when he hit the water he got his arm around Fannie but began to cramp and could not get both of the girls out. It seems that the family never recovered from this tragedy. Even as a 6 year old, James believed he was responsible for his sister's deaths and this assumption clouded the rest of his life. Nothing ever convinced him otherwise.

James Fletcher. and Fannie divorced in 1915. James Fletcher, daughter,Corry, and son, Joe returned to Mangum, Oklahoma to live out their lives. Fannie lived in various places sometimes with son Robert Snipes and sometimes with son, James Hart taking care of her.Youngest brother, Fred Snipes left for California. Fannie was living in the Corpus Christi, Texas area with son Robert when she died in 1941.
The sisters are buried together in one unmarked grave in the Montague City cemetery. Mary and Ron have searched for the sister's single grave site on several ocasions, but with no success.
James and wife. Marie came to live with their daughter, Mary Ruth and son in law, Ron Humphrey in 1987 in Bastrop, Texas. This is why they are buried in Fairview cemetery in Bastrop. Jim, known as
'Buddy", worked in the brick plants in Mineral Wells, Texas, Mangum and Clinton, Oklahoma , poured the concrete in the Baker Hotel in Mineral Wells, Texas , farmed with his father-in-law in Grandfield, Oklahoma, worked at the Fina Refinery and Post Office in Wichita Falls, Texas before finally retiring in 1987, about 3 years before his death. James used to say if he could live until the year 2000 he would have lived in 3 centuries. He almost made it.

James used to say this little ditty:

let's go to bed said sleepy head
let's tarry awhile said slow
let's put on the pot said greedy gut and sup before we go.

Cause of death was respiratory failure.
