George Thomas
At his home at Whitford where he had spent practically all his life, George Thomas, one of the best known and most highly respected men in Chester Valley, passed away this morning at six o'clock. He had been crippled by a slight stroke eight years ago and for the past three years had been under the care of an attendant, but his mind was clear and he retained all his faculties until Sunday last, when he had a sinking spell from which he did not rally. He had a fine memory and a clear knowledge of current events and was much interested in affairs about the home and country.
Mr. Thomas had held township offices during his earlier life and always took an active interest in good government, but while he was always of helpful disposition and willing to aid in any public work which might be beneficial in its nature, he did not seek public office and was inclined to avoid those matters which would call him into publicity. His well-kept home and farm were a source of great enjoyment to him and he took great interest in trees and plants whose names an nature he knew well. He inherited his love of trees and was known locally as a horticulturist of considerable ability and success.
Mr. Thomas was born August 5, 1845, in the house where he had since been residing and which was built by his great grandfather, George Thomas, in 1772. This great grandfather, was a great grandson of Richard Ap Thomas, who came from Whitford, Wales, in the year 1684, and whose son settled on the tract of land deeded the father by William Penn.
The parents of George Thomas were George Thomas, M.D., and Anna M. Thomas, nee Townsend. He was educated at private school in that locality after and later in Philadelphia Polytechnic College.
He married in 1883 Elizabeth Baugh, of Downingtown, who survives him. Three children are also living: Grace Atherton Thomas, Elizabeth T. McIlvaine, wife of Donald McIlvaine, of Rosemont, and Sarah Roberts Thomas. There are also three grandsons, Donald, Thomas and William McIlvaine.
The two unmarried daughters are living at home.
George was a brother of the late J. Preston Thomas, who did in 1905, and Charles T. Thomas, living at Whitford. He was a member of Downingtown Friends' Meeting, attending regularly and taking an active part until a short time ago.
THOMAS At Whitford, on 6th-day, the 19th inst., George Thomas, in his 81st year.
Meet at the house on 2d-day, 2d-mo. 22 inst., at 2 o'clock p.m. Interment private. Trains leaving Philadelphia at 12:25 will be met at Downingtown at 1:26 p.m.
