| Birth: | Nov. 22, 1744 Weymouth Norfolk County Massachusetts, USA | | Death: | Oct. 28, 1818 Quincy Norfolk County Massachusetts, USA | Presidential First Lady. She was the wife of 2nd United States President John Adams, and the mother of 6th United States President John Quincy Adams. Born in Waymouth, Massachusetts, on her mother's side she was descended from early prestigious leaders of the colony; her father was a Congregational minister. An avid reader, she formed an immediate bond with the young John Adams, a Harvard graduate and they were married in 1764; three sons and two daughters were born to this union which was to last more than fifty years. His traveling as a circuit judge and then as a delegate to the Continental Congress and an envoy abroad led to long separations, and her many letters, written just a she spoke with clarity, told the vivid story of a woman who stayed at home dealing with wartime shortages and running the farm with minimal help, while educating her children with the interruption of formal education. She joined him in Paris, France in 1784 when he was named Ambassador, and took great interest in the customs and manner of the French Royal Court. When her husband became the first Vice President of the United States, she and Martha Washington, wife of President George Washington, became good friends and was of great assistance in the official entertaining with the experience she had gained from the courts and society abroad. When her husband was elected President she managed even in the primitive conditions of the new capital of Washington, DC to continue a formal pattern of entertaining. They retired to Quincy, Massachusetts after John Adam's presidential term ended in 1801 and enjoyed seventeen years of companionship that they had longed for during the years of public life. Her correspondence is feted for exhibiting an early and strong leadership of Women's Rights.
