Chariton, Iowa

MRS. CAROLINE E. STEPHENS

Caroline E. Stephens, daughter of N. J. and Emma (Banks) Morlan, was born in Appanoose county, near Confidence, Iowa, on December 1, 1863, and departed this life at the Yocom hospital in Chariton on November 24, 1941, after an illness of ten days, at the age of 77 years, 11 months and 23 days.

She spent several years as a teacher in the rural schools.

On June 5, 1892, she was united in marriage to Samuel Stephens. To this union were born six children, two sons and four daughters: Loren N., of Morris, Minnesota; Lawrence J., of Omaha, Nebraska; Mrs. Ximema Robison, of Corydon; Mrs. Madgel Dewey, of Corning; Coral, of Ottumwa; and Cecil, of Chariton.

In 1895 she was united with the New Providence Baptist church at Confidence, where she held her membership until the Master called her home. She was a faithful follower of Christ and lived as near a Christ-like life as it was possible for one to live on this earth.

She spent most of her married life on a farm near Confidence. About ten years ago she moved with her family to Russell, Iowa, where she lived until the time of her death.

She leaves, besides her husband and children, two daughters-in-law and two sons-in-law; eleven grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Free of Russell; Mrs. Jessie Elam of Plano; Miss Vada Morlan of Russell; three brothers, T. L. Morlan of Russell; L. L. Morlan of Indianola; S. L. Morlan of Centerville; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

All of the children were present for the funeral services, which were held at the Woodman funeral home in Russell, Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 26, at 2 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. A. E. Beals, pastor of the Russell Baptist church.

The male quartet from the Baptist church at Corydon sang, "Take Time to be Holy" and "Abide With Me." The pall bearers were Everett Morlan, Vernon Jeffries, Allen Dixon, Ralph Rissler, Carl Mosbey and Everett Aston. The remains were laid to rest in the Russell cemetery.
