Marshall – James Jackson “Jack” Ramsey, 59, Marshall civic leader and president of the Bank of French Broad, died in his home of a heart attack at 11:30 p.m. Friday. Although he had been in declining health for some time, Mr. Ramsey had remained active in the bank and other business and civic affairs.
His business career began in Alexander where he was manager of Ramsey and Keys General Store; and later he owned and operated Ramsey Department Store in Marshall for 16 years. Mr. Ramsey had been an employee and official of the Bank of French Broad for more than 23 years, having held positions as cashier, teller, and member of the board of directors, vice president and president.
Mr. Ramsey had served on the Board of Alderman for four terms, and also served as town clerk. He was also a former president of the Marshall Civitan Club, chairman of the Madison County Wildlife Club, and at the time of his death was a member of the Marshall Chamber of Commerce and Marshall Merchant’s Assn. He was also treasurer of the Madison County Development Commission. He was an elder and trustee of Marshall Presbyterian Church. He was a member of French Broad Masonic Lodge, AF and Am, a 32nd degree Mason, and a Shriner.
Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Selma Rector Ramsey; two sisters, Mrs. R.W. Zink and Mrs. Norma Harris, both of Marshall; and one brother, William B. Ramsey, also of Marshall.
Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday in Marshall Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Charles Heier and the Rev. Richard Mellin will officiate. Burial will be in Pritchard Cemetery, with members of French Broad Lodge No. 292 conducting graveside rites. Pallbearers will be C.L. Rudisill Jr., E.L. Loftin, E.C. Teague, J.M. Baley Jr., W.T. McKinney and Robel Redmon. Honorary pallbearers will be elders and trustees of the church and officers and directors of the Bank of French Broad. The body will remain at Bowman Funeral Home until taken to the church to lie in state an hour prior to services.
