GEORGE W. BAKER
George W. Baker, son of Jesse and Rachel Baker, was born May 20, 1873, in Liberty township, Lucas county, Iowa, and passed peacefully away at his home in Chariton Dec. 25, 1954, at the age of 81 years, seven months and five days after a long period of failing health.
He grew to manhood on a farm near Oakley where his parents lived. While quite young, he worked for farmers in Warren and Lucas counties where he made life-long friends.
He was married to Mrs. Hepsie Ferguson Arnold May 29, 1894. One son, Leo Glenn, was born to them on May 12, 1895, and died May 15, 1918, while serving with the U. S. Army during World War I.
Two and one half years later, Mrs. Baker passed away. Since then, George had lived part of the time on his farm near Norwood where he enjoyed the work, being of an industrious nature, until he was physically unable to carry on.
Much of his life has been sad and lonely but he overcame this loneliness to some extent by his companionship with older people, his love for young people and little children. He was cheerful and patient and never ceased to appreciate the visits of neighbors, friends and relatives during his last illness.
He leaves to mourn his departure, 15 nieces and nephews, five step-grandchildren and their families, a step-daughter, Effie Arnold, and many friends.
Those of his immediate family, besides his father and mother, who have passed on before him were seven sisters and four brothers, Mrs. Marietta Killen; Mrs. Elizabeth Parr; Mrs. Letha Parr; Mrs. Caroline Wilson; Mrs. Lucinda Crooks; Malinda and Myrtle Baker; William; Taylor; James; and Henry.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 28, at 2 p.m. at the Miley funeral chapel in Chariton, conducted by Rev. Don Klepfenstein from Graybill, Ind. Mrs. Carl Olson and Mrs. Mabel Cavett sang two duets, "Beyond the Sunset" and "We'll Never Grow Old." Casket bearers were Lemly Curtis, Marvin Brewer, Clyde Pottorff, Kenneth Baker. Interment was at the Mt. Zion cemetery.
