Elmer E. Champagne was born on August 19, 1926 in Red Lake county, the son of Amedie and Delima (Carriere) Champagne. He attended rural school.
Elmer was united in marriage to Theresa Lessard on October 25, 1948 at Oklee. The couple lived in the Brooks area where Elmer farmed until his retirement in 1979. He also worked at the American Crystal Beet Plant at Crookston, Brooks Cheese Factory and Simplot plant at Crookston. He retired in 1996 from his last job hauling milk for Dan Jolly.
Elmer was a life member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church of Brooks and a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters.
He enjoyed gardening, mowing his lawn, watching television and especially spending time with his grandchildren.
Brooks - Elmer Champagne, 75, died Monday, October 23, 2000 at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.
Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, October 27, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Brooks with Father Tim Bushy officiating. Lorraine Mercil will be the organist. Casketbearers will be Mark Gunderson, Kent Bergerson, Michael Halsa, Tony Halsa, Dan Jolly and Rodney Cote.
Visitation will be held Thursday, October 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. with a 7:30 p.m. Rosary service. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to services at the church.
Elmer is survived by his wife, Theresa of Brooks; two daughters, Kathleen Halsa of Thief River Falls and Janel Champagne (friend Greg Lord) of Brooks; five sons, Richard Champagne (friend Kimberly Bruley) of Thief River Falls, Ronald Champagne (friend Marlene Hince) of Casper, Wy., Jeffrey (Debbra) Champagne of Brooks, Kevin Champagne (friend Jewell Burns) of Warrington, Ore. and Scott Champagne of Brooks; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two step grandchildren; a brother, William Champagne of Oklee; and three sisters, Luella (Ronald) Bushaw of Fargo, N.D., Dorene (Maurice) Cote of Mentor and Marion Martell of Red Lake Falls.
He was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth in 1996; a brother, Onezime Champagne; a sister, Lorene Westman; and his parents.
