Marie Smith Pate, residing at Cornelia Nixon Davis Nursing Home, died early Wednesday afternoon, October 1, 2003.

Mrs. Pate, a life-long Wilmingtonian, was born April 26, 1905. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Joyce Pate Russ; and her husband, Jack Pate.

Mrs. Pate has been a cherished member of Trinity Reformed Presbyterian Church since its formation. She served as church pianist during the church's formative years. Throughout her thirty year membership at Trinity, Mrs. Pate was admired for her faith and love of Christian song which she never lost. Prior to her Trinity membership, Mrs. Pate was a faithful member of Immanuel Presbyterian Church. Throughout her long years with Immanuel, she was a faithful choir member with vocal ability that made her a known and requested soloist in Wilmington and the surrounding area.

Mrs. Pate is survived by two grandchildren, Cheryl Russ of Chapel Hill and Jack Russ of Wilmington; one sister, Kathryn Wilson Bender, and niece Pat Wilson Dennis, both of Wilmington. Additional surviving nieces and nephews are Ms. Jeanette Bowden, Ms. Doris Williams, Mrs. Lynn Schupp, Mr. Jimmy Smith, Mr. Gene Smith and Mr. Graham Smith.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 4, 2003, at Andrews Mortuary, Market Street Chapel, by Rev. Fred Hofland and Rev. Hiram Evans. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
