Horace Whitmore was born in Ontario (now Livingston) County, New York, in 1817 the son of Peleg and Rebecca (Rice) Wetmore. He was the grandson of Joseph Wetmore of Litchfield and Middlefield, Connecticut and Beata (Bradley) Wetmore. In April, 1837 he purchase land in Mundy Township, Genesee County, Michigan.

He married, in Mundy, on 8 July 1841, Desire Page Hill, the daughter of Darius Gates and Wealthy (Blodget) Hill. They were the parents of William Henry Whitmore, Wealthy Rebecca (Whitmore) Stiles, Lizzie (Whitmore) Cross, Monroe Whitmore, and Carrie and Abby Whitmore, who died young.

Wolverine Republican, Fllint, Mich., 18 Apr. 1896: "Horace Whitmore, of Mundy, died at the home of his daughter Mrs. Wm. Cross, at Rankin Monday night [13 April 1896]. He leaves a son and a daughter, Mrs. T. B. Stiles of Middleburg, Ind., and Monroe Whitmore, of Nebraska. The funeral was held from the Presbyterian church at Rankin and the remains taken to Whigville for burial."
