Born and raised in Knox County Kentucky. Attended elementary school at Middle Fork, Kentucky, normal School at Corbin, Kentucky. He passed the teachers exam and taught at at Dorthy, Kentucky (near Corbin) for one year.
At the end of the school year enlisted in the U. S. Army where he served for over 20 years. He served at Fort Levenworth, Kansas and Fort Ord, California. He served in the Spanish American War in Cuba and the Phillippine Islands. After leaving the Army, he worked for the War Dept in Washington D. C. for several years. After World War One, he returned to Knox County and to his family farm where he lived for most of the rest of his life. He was a Mason, his membership at Campground Lodge.
