William Flemon Cowan was born in Georgia. He had 3 sons by his first wife(unknown)-James Moses COWAN, William F.COWAN Jr.& Joseph COWAN.
His second wife was Mary Ann Primm. They married Dec. 2, 1839 in Limestone Co., Alabama. Their children were Martha J.(m. Thomas Preston Edgin AGENT), Mary Elizabeth(m. Wm. Welcome WILLHELM), John Abraham (m. Susan Emmaline HAILE),Louisa T.,Emily C.(m. ADCOCK),Sarah Arkansas(m. George ALLISON), Elias, Josephine Paralee, Maranda, and Alfred.

He served the small community as a doctor and Mary,as midwife. John, Elias and Alfred COWAN built a sawmill, gristmill and cotton gin on nearby Katemcy Creek. Alfred opened the first store and in 1884 became the first postmaster.
