Fred Backus Rites At Winnemucca
Winnemucca, Oct. 16 - Funeral services for Fred E. Backus were held from the Edna T. Eddy and Son parlor on Monday afternoon with The Rev. George Foreman officiating.
Backus who resided in Humboldt County for the past forty-five years died late Friday afternoon from a heart attack. He had finished doing a few evening chores around the house of his daughter, Mrs. Charles Glenn, when he complained of not feeling well Backus then went in to lie down and died shortly afterwards.
He was born in Rossie, N.Y., on November 21, 1874. A few years later he moved to Utah where he made his home for a number of years. While residing in Utah he met Rhoda Evans and the couple married on October 8, 1898.
The young couple then moved to Humboldt County where the deceased followed mining and ranching for a number of years. The past few years he has been Water Commissioner on the Humboldt River. At the time of his death, he was working on the highway maintenance crew out of Winnemucca.
Three sons and four daughters survive. They are: H. Eugene, Lynn and Leland Backus and Mrs. Charles Glenn, Mrs. Helen King, Mrs. Phil M. Tobin and Mrs. Tom O'Carroll.
