Harry G. Whitehead, age 89, of Byron, Michigan, died March 1, 2006, at McLaren Regional Medical Center in Flint.
The funeral service was held at the Streeter Funeral Home, Byron. The Rev. Fred Finzer and the Rev. Lloyd Hansen will officiate. Burial in the Byron Cemetery in Byron.
Harry Gordon Whitehead was born in Byron on June 17, 1916, the son of Herbert Whitehead and Mable (Savage) Whitehead. He and Mildred G. Hansen were married in Willis, Mich., on June 16, 1940.
He spent his entire life in his beloved town of Byron.
Harry was very involved in Boy Scouting as a young person. He was the second boy in Shiawassee County to receive his Eagle Scout rank, with gold, silver and bronze palms. He later served as a Scoutmaster and also as a committee man. He taught Red Cross beginning swimming and life saving classes at Myers Lake for 25 years. He managed the Byerly store for 12 years, then owned and operated Byron Hardware before beginning his college education.
Harry was a graduate of Byron High School, class of 1933, and University of Michigan with a bachelor of arts degree in 1962, majoring in mathematics. He received a master of science degree in counseling. He taught math in Grand Blanc and Byron, retiring in 1976. For his involvement and support of the Byron Area Schools, Harry was awarded the Byron Board of Education "DASH" Award in 2003.
Harry was active in the community, serving as board of education president, chamber of commerce president, athletic event announcer, village clerk, ambulance driver and a member of the fire department for 37 years, with 10 years as chief.
Upon retirement, Harry and Mildred became active in the Wally Byum Airstream Travel Club, serving in many capacities, including state president of the club.
Harry and Mildred were active in starting the Byron Community Scholarship Fund, having served on the committee for many years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Byron; life member of Byron Lodge 80 F&AM, of which he served as worshipful master in 1940; life member and past patron of Huldah Chapter 212, OES; and life member of Durand RAM 139. He was named District Mason of the Year in 1999.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a life member of Reed-Raymond VFW Post 2272 in Durand.
Surviving were his wife, Mildred Whitehead; sons, Robert and wife Nona of Byron, Lloyd and wife Judy of Ida and Harry Lee and wife Shelly of Ovid; grandchildren, Heather Avera, Heath Whitehead, Hunt Whitehead, Hance Whitehead, Shantelle Whitehead, Tonya Whitehead, Tony Whitehead and Robin Smith-Barry; great-grandchildren, Brennan Crawford, Nathanial Crawford, London Whitehead, Hawkins Whitehead, Hayden Whitehead, Frankie Boeff III and Crystal Boeff; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his son, Herbert Whitehead, and sister, Mrs. Henry (Jane) Johnston.
