| Birth: | unknown | | Death: | Oct. 10, England | Roman Catholic Saint, Archbishop of York. He spent his early life as a Monk in St. Andrew's monastery at Rome, remaining there until 601 AD when St. Gregory the Great sent him to assist St. Augustine with his mission to convert the English. He worked mainly in Kent, until; in 625 AD he accompanied Ethelburga, sister of King Eadbald of Kent on her journey to marry the pagan Northumbrian king Edwin. He was made a bishop by St. Justus, Archbishop of Canterbury, before leaving Kent and converted Edwin and many of his people to Christianity. He then established a See at York and began work on a stone church there. When Edwin was defeated in 633 AD he escorted the Queen and her children to safety in Kent. He devoted the remainder of his life to the Diocese of Rochester where he was buried. His remains were later moved to a silver shrine in the new Norman cathedral, but this was destroyed in the reformation. (bio by: js)
