Author, playwright, screenwriter. He was educated at Milton Academy and then Harvard University. He was wounded in World War I while fighting with the Canadian Black Watch in Europe. Upon returning to the United States, he began working for such magazines as Vanity Fair and Life as a movie critic. His first play was The Road to Rome; (1927). He had already begun to write for the silver screen in 1926. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1936, 1939, and 1941. He won the Pulitzer for Biography in 1948. He won an Academy Award for Best Screenplay for The Best Years of Our Lives in 1946.

What a tremendous writer you were. FDR depended on you. Your phrase "the arsenal of democracy" was exactly the right term to describe America during the trying times of World War II. Rest in Peace.
