Thomas Esmonde Harper was married to Elizabeth Bell and had 10 children in Philadelphia. He usually went by either T Esmonde or TE Harper during his lifetime. He was, among other things, a very well respected and prominent business man who manufactured watch casings. He employed over 50 people in Philadelphia, New York, Baltimore and Boston. TE studied under one of the masters of the day, William Warner, the first watch case maker in the US. Thomas owned two businesses in his lifetime, one named Harper and McLean and then just one under the name of T Esmonde Harper, both headquartered in Philadelphia, PA. In addition to his businesses he also was an Life Insurance Agent.
T Esmonde was also a Grand Master of the Rising Star Masonic Lodge #126 in Philadelphia in 1857. That was the year his first son, Thomas Esmonde Jr, was born. He was still active in 1880 when he as asked to be the treasurer of that organization as well as on the Library Committee. I would imagine he was involved until his death in 1905. Which would mean over 50 years of association with the fraternal organization of Masons.
He also was a co-manager of Moyamensing Soup Kitchens in the 1860s and his business for a major contributor of funds to help feed the homeless in West Philadelphia during that time.
Thomas Esmonde was also listed as a trustee of the American Life Insurance and Trust Company there in the city in the 1860s as well.
He was a Presbyterian and was a treasurer of that denomination in 1878.
He would outlive his wife Elizabeth who died on Jan 26, 1890.
