Frances Bradley was the daughter of George Bradley of Burke County, NC (according to 1850 Census) and Elizabeth Bradley of Rutherford County, NC (according to 1850 Census). (Elizabeth was white according to the 1900 Indian Schedule but her children were 1/2 white indicating that their father was Cherokee.) George and Elizabeth married in Macon County, North Carolina, 18 January 1843. The family lived in Jackson County in the 1860 Census. Frances' older and younger brothers George and John were reportedly born in Jackson County so it is likely she was born in Jackson County, even though her death certificate says Swain County. She married Peter Mathis 4 September 1877 in Sevier County, Tennessee.
