WAYNESBORO, Aug. 24 – Wirt Edward Hughes, 76, 1003 Mulberry St., Waynesboro, died 12:05 p.m. today. He was a member of the Main Street Methodist Church. He was a charter and the oldest member of the Waynesboro Moose Lodge. He was a retired sheet metal worker, having been employed years with the Rife-Loth Corp., now the Virginia Metal Crafters.
He was born on Oct. 13, 1879, in Nelson County, the son of the John James and Susan Sauls Hughes.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Nettie Virginia Davis Hughes; seven sons: Herbert E., Charles A., Sidney, and Richard, all of Waynesboro; Harry G., John J., both of Staunton; Edgar of Powtucket, R. I.; three brothers: Isaac Hughes, Maxwell Hughes, both of Chillicothe, O.; Richard Hughes, Gene, W. Va.,; four sisters: Mrs. Earl Ellifruit, Mrs. Bettie Hughes, Chillicothe, O.; Mrs. Nan Palmer, Bournesville, O.; Mrs. V. M. Reynolds, ____.irhope, Ala.; 21 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at two p.m. from the chapel of the Etter Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. George H. Boyd. Burial will be in the River View Cemetery.
