Sarah Darling Baldwin was the daughter of David Baldwin and Julia E. Mathewson of McDonough, Chenango, New York. She was named after her grandmother Sarah Darling. She married Moses Taft 24 Oct 1860 in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. They had children: David Baldwin Taft, Frank Elmer Taft, Mary Johna Taft and Lydia Louisa Taft.
David Baldwin Taft born 4 Nov 1861 and died 6 May 1865. As an infant David and his mother Sarah were injured in a Stage Coach accident. A large trunk fell on him and his mother. David never walked or talked. He died at the age of three years as a result of this accident.
Frank Elmer Taft born 15 Jun 1863 in Burrillville, Providence, Rhode Island. He married Katie Thompson White daughter of Allen Bosworth White and Margaret Ann Graham. They had children: George Allen Taft, Clarence Frank Taft and Mabel Ruth Taft. Frank Elmer Taft died 25 Jul 1942 in Sioux City, Woodbury, Iowa.
Mary Johna Taft born 16 Aug 1865 in Georgetown, Michigan. She married Raymond Phillips 19 Oct 1893 in Sioux City, Woodbury, Iowa. They had no children. Mary Johna Taft died 17 Dec 1952 in Los Angeles, California.
Lydia Louisa Taft born 25 Jul 1868 in Covington, Dakota, Nebraska. She married James Russell Ingram in 1892 in Ticonderoga, Essex, New York. He was the son of Lorenzo Russell Ingram and Elizabeth LaMorder of Ticonderoga, Essex, New York and neighboring Vermont. They had children: Elmer Leroy Ingram and Lucy M. Ingram. Lydia divorced James Russell Ingram in 1899 in Sioux City, Woodbury, Iowa and in 1908 married Frank S. Wynia. They had a daughter Mary Darling Wynia. Lydia Louisa Taft died 28 Oct 1953 in Post Falls, Kootenai, Idaho.
Sarah Darling Baldwin was a fiercely independent woman who never divorced Moses Taft, but they lived separately since 1881. She supported herself and her children delivering mail by horse and buggy in Sioux City, Woodbury, Iowa. She was an excellent marksman who loved to hunt wild game. She was also an excellent seamstress.
Her grandparents on her father's side were Richard Baldwin and Hannah Baldwin of Leicester, Worcester, Massachusetts who migrated to McDonough, Chenango, New York. Her great grandparents were David Baldwin and Sarah Tucker of Leicester, Worcester, Massachusetts.
Her grandparents on her mother's side were Daniel Mathewson and Sarah Darling of Providence County Rhode Island who migrated to McDonough, Chenango, New York. Her great grandparents were Joshua Mathewson and Mary Ross of Burrillville, Providence, Rhode Island.
Her great grandfather Joshua Mathewson lived to be 103 years and 6 months. He owned over 600 acres of land in Burrillville, Providence, Rhode Island. Joshua Mathewson's parents Othniel Mathewson and Sarah Winsor both lived to be over 100 years of age.
This family line through Sarah Winsor goes back to Roger Williams who founded Rhode Island as a refuge against Religious persecution.
