Private, 2e Bataillon, Royal 22e Régiment (Van Doos) based at Valcartier, near Québec City. Aged 26, born in St-Hyacinthe, QC. He was serving with the Canadian contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
Pte Courcy died after a fall from his position on a cliff while conducting counterinsurgency operations near the village of Nakhonay, in the Panjwaii district, about 17 kilometres southwest of Kandahar City. He had stepped on an explosive device before falling to his death.
Pte Courcy joined the military in June 2006 and deployed in April 2009 on his first tour in Afghanistan. He was described as an enthusiastic and meticulous soldier who served as a confidante to his brothers in arms. He is survived by his mother Ginette Fecteau, father Marc Courcy, and sister Julie along with other family members.
Military funeral held on Saturday, July 25, 2009 at Saint-Matthieu Church in Beloeil, near Montreal.
There have been 125 Canadian military fatalities since the start of the Afghanistan conflict in 2002. One diplomat and two aid workers have also died.
