The source of his birthdate is the journal of his mother, Henrietta Hall Shuck, the first female missionary to China.
Enlisted as a Sergeant on 8 November 1861. Enlisted in Company A, 4th Cavalry Regiment Kentucky on 24 Dec 1861. Promoted to Full Captain on 17 Feb 1865. Mustered Out Company A, 4th Cavalry Regiment Kentucky on 21 Aug 1865 at Macon, Georgia.
Ryland Keeling Shuck was born on 29 October 1837 in Macau, China, son of Jehu Lewis Shuck and Henrietta Hall. His parents were missionaries in China and he was born on his mother's 20th birthday. He came to the United States with his brother Lewis Hall Shuck aboard the Loo Choo on 17 June 1845, arriving in New York City. On 19 August 1850, Ryland and his brother Lewis lived with his grandfather Addison Hall's family in Lancaster County, Virginia. He had attended school in the previous year.
In June 1858, Ryland was arrested and put in jail for stealing $275 from the Adams Express Company. He was given the money to take to a "Mr. L." and gave a forged receipt to another man; at the time he had been working as a teacher and had recently been baptized into the Bank Street Baptist Church.
On 30 July 1860, "Wyland" lived in Jeffersonville, Clark County, Indiana, where he was in a penitentiary, his occupation listed as a school teacher.
Ryland enlisted as a Sergeant in Louisville, Kentucky in Company A of the 4th Kentucky Cavalry on 11 November 1861. He joined his unit on 24 December 1861. He re-enlisted on 1 January 1864 and was promoted from Sergeant to Captain on 17 February 1865. He was mustered out on 21 August 1865 at Macon, Georgia.
Ryland was married during the Civil War on 27 March 1862 at Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky to Marietta Crumbaugh. Marietta was born circa 1846, the daughter of Jacob and Rebecca Crumbaugh. They were divorced in 1867 in Floyd County, Indiana.
On 24 June 1870, Ryland was a prisoner in the Old Penitentiary in Frankfort, Franklin County, Kentucky, working as a laborer.
On 17 April 1871, Ryland was married in Floyd County to Elizabeth Kelly.
Ryland is listed in the New Albany (Floyd County, Indiana) city directory for 1880 as working as a pedlar and living on West Street.
In 1880 Census, Ryland is living in Day Twp, Montcalm Co, Michigan, under the name "Robert Steel", with his wife Anna and her parents Calvin and Sarah (Hubble) Maynard. Using the alias, he married 14 year-old Anna Maynard on 28 March 1872, in Sand Lake, Kent Co, Michigan. She was born in April 1858, in Charleston, Tioga Co, Pennsylvania. Ryland applied for a Civil War invalid's pension on 18 October 1891 while living in Michigan.
In The 1894 Veteran's Census, Ryland was living in Stanton, Montcalm County, Michigan.
On 19 June 1900, Ryland (listed as "Robert") and Annie lived in Springvale, Emmet County, Michigan in the household of John and Sarah Packard. Two other relatives lived in the household, Winfield Maynard and Minnie Withy. Ryland was not listing as having a job.
On 23 April 1910, Ryland and Anna lived with their granddaughter Minnie M. Withey and a brother-in-law Willard Maynard, at 618 E. 8th Street in Traverse City. Ryland was working as a public school teacher.
Ryland died on 19 February 1912 at 501 W. 15th Street in Traverse City from paralysis. Annie applied for a Civil War widow's pension on 4 March 1918.
Anna died on 22 October 1924 in Grand Traverse County.
Ryland and Anna buried in Oakwood Cemetery.
Ryland and Marietta (Crumbaugh)Shuck were the parents of one child:
i. CECELIA GERTRUDE SHUCK was born on 30 October 1863 at Bowling Green, Kentucky.
ii. LEWIS C. SHUCK was born between 1863 and 1870, and died before 1870.
Ryland and Anna (Maynard) Shuck were the parents of three children (all dead before 1910):
i. IDA M. SHUCK was born circa 1875 in Michigan. She was married to FRANCIS REUBEN WITHEY and died on 22 November 1893 in Stanton, Montcalm County, Michigan.
ii. HAZEL SHUCK was born about 1905 and died before 1910.
