James D. "Jake" Abbott, age 87, of Wabasha, died Friday, February 22, 2013 at St. Elizabeth's Health Care Center in Wabasha. He was born November 20, 1925 in Green Isle, MN, the son of Howard and Mary (Egan) Abbott while his parents were visiting her family there. He was raised in St. Paul and graduated from St. Thomas Military Academy. He then served four years in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during WWII, serving as a radioman on the transport ship USS War Hawk. Following his discharge in 1946 he returned to St. Paul and furthered his education at the College of St. Thomas, graduating in 1950. He then attended the University of Minnesota where he received a degree in Mortuary Science. He worked as a funeral director for O'Halloran and Murphy Funeral Home in St. Paul until 1960.

He married Anne T. Flahavan August 23, 1952 at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis. With the desire to own their own business and raise their family in a smaller community the couple purchased the Wise Furniture and Funeral Home business in 1960 and moved their family to Wabasha. Renaming the business Abbott-Wise Furniture and Funeral Home, he operated the business until selling the business to his son in 1989. During his time in business he also had an ambulance service for the community. He continued to be active in the furniture and funeral business with his son during his retirement years. His wife, Anne, died of breast cancer in 1973.

Jake was an active member of his church and the Wabasha community. He was a member of St. Felix Catholic Church, serving as a longtime usher and a trustee of the St. Felix Cemetery Board. He was a member of St. Joseph's Society of the Catholic Aid Association, the Knights of Columbus and the Men's Catholic Order of Foresters. He was a life member and past commander of the Wabasha American Legion Post #50 and the Burkhardt-Roemer VFW Post #4086. He helped organize various events at both posts with the proceeds going to area charities.

He was a charter organizer and member of Coffee Mill Golf and Country Club. He served on the golf club board from 1965 until the mid 1990's. He was charter member of the Wabasha Park Board and served for over 25 years. He was a driver for the Meals on Wheels program and a regular contributor to the Wabasha Area Food Shelf. He was the first representative in Wabasha for the Salvation Army. He provided rides to local residents to medical appointments and he helped veterans passing through town with meals, gasoline and motel stays. Together with Carla Schuth and I. J. Burkhardt, they organized the annual Wabasha St. Patrick's Day parade, now in its 25th year.

Most important to Jake was his longtime commitment and dedication to St. Elizabeth's Hospital, the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother and to Ministry Health Care. He served on the hospital board from 1962 until the mid 1990's when he moved to the St. Elizabeth's Foundation Board. He was instrumental in beginning and maintaining the hospital's "Field of Beans" program and its Guardian Angels program. He received the Bishop's Medal from Bishop Bernard Harrington of the Diocese of Winona in 2005 for his volunteerism and dedication to his church, the hospital and the community.
