W.E. (Bill) Barnes
Tonasket
W.E. (Bill) Barnes, 81, of Tonasket, peacefully passed away Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, while surrounded by family members at his home, following an extended illness.
He was born on June 6, 1918 to Wilfrid A. and Grace E. (Mitchell) Barnes at the Blue Lake Ranch, 11 miles south of Loomis, in the Sinlahekin Valley. When Bill was six years old, the family moved to his present home, on the Ellis-Barnes Livestock Ranch, near Whitestone Mountain. He attended Brittain Flat School through the 4th grade, then Tonasket Schools, graduating in 1936. He graduated from Washington State University in 1940 with a degree in Forestry and Range Management.
He worked for the Forest Service as a fire lookout in the summers of 1936 through 1940, serving on Mt. Anne, Buckhorn and Bonaparte Lookouts. He worked at Boeing from 1940 to 1943 as an Engineer.
He joined the U.S. Army in 1943. He was a Staff Sergeant with the U.S. Army Engineers, serving in the European Theater Campaign in France, England, Scotland, Germany and Belgium. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
Upon his return, he joined his brother Vic and his father working the family ranch, remaining there for the rest of his life.
He married Betty Buckland at Tonasket on May 31, 1947.
He was a member of the Loomis Community Church, the American Legion, Okanogan County and Washington State Cattleman's Associations serving as President of both organizations. He served as a board member of the Soil Conservation District, the Okanogan County Fair and the Loomis Church.
Bill enjoyed the mountains and hills surrounding the Loomis area, often escaping the heat of the valley in the summer for picnics, camping and fishing excursions with the family. After semi-retirement in the ‘90s, he would find great pleasure in mending fences on the Ellemeham Mt. Range. He and Betty also greatly enjoyed many trips to the Southwest, taking the "back roads" and loved looking at all parts of the country along the way.
Bill is survived by his wife at home; a son, Bob and wife, Nancy; granddaughters, Stacie Ramon and husband, Michael, Kellie Hubbard and husband, Jason and Jill Schmelzer and husband, Ryan of Tonasket; son, John and wife, Fern; granddaughters, Nikki Daggett and Lacey of Entiat; son, Steve and wife, Kathy; grandchildren, Jonathan, Kaycee and Bill of Young, AZ; daughter, Carol Kaczka and her husband, Bob; granddaughter Katie of Spokane; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
His parents and two brothers, Vic and Glen, preceded him in death.
Services will be Friday, Jan. 28, 2000 at 1 p.m. at the Loomis Community Church. Pastor Matt Sconce and John Newton will be officiating.
Memorials may be made to the Loomis Community Church, Washington State Cattleman's Endowment Fund or a charity of your choice.
