Very famous artist. Although he also did portraits, he is most remembered as a painter of historical scenes. Two of his paintings are in the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C:
- "Discovery of the Mississippi by De Soto", 1853 / in the Rotunda.
- "Battle of Lake Erie", 1873 / in the U.S. Senate.

Among his other paintings are:
- "Siege of Vera Cruz"
- "Battle of Buena Vista"
- "Landing of the Pilgrims"
- "Washington at Valley Forge"
- "Christopher Columbus Before the Court of Salamanca"
