A native of Bluffton, Dr. William F. "Bill" Conner, 74, Decatur, died unexpectedly Sunday, March 19, 2006 at Adams Memorial Hospital in Decatur.Born May 27, 1931 in Bluffton to Benjamin F. and Veda Masterson Conner, he served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and was a chiropractor for 46 years, 30 years with an office in Decatur.He was active in his church, the Optimist Club and the Masonic Lodge. At St. Mark's United Methodist Church, he was a long-time member of the Builders Sunday school class, the choir and bell choir, and was a registered lay speaker in the United Methodist Church. He was a past president and secretary-treasurer for the Decatur Optimist Club, and served as Lt. Governor of Zone 5, Governor of North District in Indiana and was presently serving as Lt. Governor of Zone 4. He was a member of the Decatur Masonic Lodge 571 F. & A.M., Scottish Rite Valley-Fort Wayne, Adams County Scottish Rite Club, Mizpah Shrine Fort Wayne and the Adams County Shrine Club, of which he was secretary-treasurer. He also served as secretary to the local chapter of the American Red Cross and was a member of the American Legion Post 43.Survivors include a daughter, Nola Conner of Spring, Texas; a sister, Mary Jennette Speece of Poneto; Phyllis Rayer, Decatur, his partner for 14 years; two grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence and Kenny "Kay" Conner; and a sister, Betty Klefeker.Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mark's United Methodist Church. Calling hours are Thursday from 2 to 8 p.m. at Haggard & Sefton Funeral Home in Decatur and for one hour prior to the services Friday at the church. There will be an Optimist Memorial Service at 6 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, and a Masonic Service at 8 p.m. Graveside military rites will be performed by the American Legion Post 43.Preferred memorials are to the church, the Optimist Scholarship Fund or the Red Cross.
