Matthias Stecher's inscription on his gravestone tells his life story.
Here is the basic translation:
Birth and Death Certificate of Matthes(Matthias) Stecher, son of Melchior Stecher and his wife Christina. Born in Bucks County, Baptized and Confirmed. Twice he stood and joined in marriage, first with Christina Schneider. They spent about 26 years together and had 2 sons and 3 daughters. Married a second time with Elizabeth Laffer which they were married about 17 years. He lived and experienced 26 grandchildren. Passed away at 73 years old.
Matthias was a Private in the Northampton County Militia under his brother, Capt. Lewis Stecher during the Revolutionary War. He has been recognized for his military service to our country by the Daughters of the American Revolution(DAR). He took the Oath of Allegiance on July 1, 1778, his father, Melchior took it the next day.
Matthias and Anna Christina had 5 children, 2 sons and 2 daughters are connected to this memorial. One daughter, Mary, has not had her burial site located yet.
Matthias was obviously well thought of as a resident of Forks Township where he died as the local paper at the time listed this obituary.
