Ruth Landreth Byrd, of Livingston, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 8, 2009, after several months of failing health.

She was born Audrey Ruth Landreth in Knoxville on Jan. 7, 1930, where she lived until she was eight. She then moved to Etowah and lived with James "Cy" and Goldie Turner until attending secretary school in Atlanta, Ga., where she met her future husband, Jim Byrd. They were married in Etowah on June 12, 1951. They lived in Atlanta, Ga. and Tampa, Fla. briefly, then Bartow, Fla. for 30 years until retirement, when they moved to the Etowah area. They were active members of Delano Baptist Church. Wanting to be closer to family, they moved to Livingston in 1999, where they were active with Okalona Methodist Church.

She will always be remembered for her gentle spirit, warm heart, charming smile, kind words to all, great sense of humor and for being a willing listener with sympathy but without judgment. She loved life and touched the hearts of everyone she met. She enjoyed being a mother and grandmother, going to church and choir, reading the Bible, being a friend to all, gardening, bird watching and playing board and card games (she usually won no matter what the game).

Survivors include her children and their spouses, Andy and Katheryn Byrd of El Prado, N.M., Spencer and Ruth Byrd of Oliver, Ga., Penelope Wingo of Wasilla, Alaska, and Cindy and Jeff Nickel of Celina; seven grandchildren, Clark Gregg, Katie Jones, Michael Byrd, Jessica Ivey, Ashley Byrd, Turner Wingo and Colin Wingo; and three great-grandchildren, Mick Jones, Grace Gregg and Addison Gregg.

She will be missed by everyone, but especially by Cindy, who was not only a daughter, but a lifelong companion who gave untiringly of herself to make her mom's last years more fun and fulfilling.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Bordwine Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery where she will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband.

A memorial service will be held at Okalona Church in Livingston at a later date.
