|Birth: ||1779, Ireland|
It has been claimed by some that he was born in 1782 in Ireland, that the family arrived in the US about 1816 and were naturalized on 24 Sep 1822 in Jefferson county, Ohio.
Some have claimed that he had at least four children.
The children most often named have been Joseph, Thomas and recently Benjamin Jr..
The problem is that a 1782 birth year would have made him a very young father if the birthdate of 1793 for son Benjamin Jr. is accurate.
The pieces of the puzzle just do not fit together very well.
In the 1840 census for Steubenville, Jefferson Co, Ohio, a Benjamin Mairs was listed with age 60-69 range with one female in the same age range. That would put his age at the latest of 1780 and earliest at 1771. In the 1850 census for Island Creek Township in Jefferson Co, Ohio, he was listed at age 71 (and born in Ireland) which would put his birth year at 1779 which is what I have listed at the top of this memorial. His wife was listed as Rachel and she was listed as age 77.
So if this elder Benjamin was the Benjamin who married Rachel Kennedy, then he lived through at least 1850. (Note: Son Dr. Benjamin and Sarah Mairs were also listed as living in this county in 1850 as well.)
One can assume that they were buried in Jefferson county, Ohio but I have not found any proof. I created this memorial to allow the family to tie the three known sons and their descendants together.
It is claimed in letters within the Mairs family, that the Benjamin and Rachel Kennedy Mairs family arrived in North America on 12 May 1816 in St. Johns, Canada. It was their son Thomas' 10th birthday!
