Named after two of his maternal Grandfather's,Edmond Mathis Smith was the son of,John Giles Smith of Appling County ,Georgia and Marium Mathis of Duplin County North Carolina.He was born on Aug.5,1822 in Appling County,Georgia.Edmond Mathis Smith's maternal Grandfather was Edmund Mathis of Clinch County,Georgia,who had fought in the Indian Wars there.Edmond Mathis Smith's maternal 2nd Great Grandfather was,Edmund Mathis Sr , born in the Isle of Wight Virginia he moved to Duplin County,North Carolina and established a large plantation on the banks of Six Runs which is a branch of the Black River in Duplin County,North Carolina.Edmund Mathis Sr , had also served in the Revolutanary War.He had enlisted in Captain Turner's company from April 25,1776 though Aug 10,1778.He allowed the grounds of his plantation to be used for the training and the mutering of troops during the revolution.

John Giles Smith with his wife Marium Mathis (daughter of Edmund Mathis ) and family moved to Hamilton county Florida in about 1833. Their son,subject of this biograpy,Edmond Mathis Smith married Mary Anna Lee on Feb 20 1845 in Hamilton County Florida.She was the daughter of John Lee and Elizabeth Jones Lee of Hamilton county Florida.Edmond and Mary Lee had the following seven children....

1)John Lee Smith, b Jan 12 1850,d Sept 30,1940.(served in Captain Charles F. Cone's company during the Civil War)

2)Emily Marion 'Emma" Smith b 1853, m David Robarts.After her husband, David died in 1897 ,she moved to Miami,Florida with her son,James Burton Robarts.Emma died in Miami in 1946,she was 93.

3)Sarah Jane Smith b Jul 22,1855,d Mar 12,1947

4)Hattie Harriett Smith ,b Jul 9 1856 d Jun 28,1899,

5)Elizabeth Adele Smith b Oct 25,1858,d Sep 11,1937

6)Mary Catherine Cone Smith,b July 22,1862 d Mar 21 1957 (born during the Civil War, Mary Catherine was given the honorary middle name Cone for her fathers friendship and service with, Captain Charles F. Cone)

In the Seminole Indian Wars of 1837, Edmond Mathis Smith joined and served with Capt Ross' Company 1,commanded by Capt John Warren.

On Nov 14 1861 in White Springs Florida Edmond Mathis Smith was appointed 2nd Lieutenant in, Captain Charles F. Cone's Company E,1st Florida Cavalry by Captain Cone himself.That same day Edmund's brother in law,Wiley Henry Lee was appoited 1st Lieutenant of company E,1st Florida Cavalry.Wiley was the brother to,Edmumd Mathis Smith's wife,Mary Anna Lee.Prior to the war,Edmond Mathis Smith and Charles F. Cone's were good friends and next door neighbors in White Springs,Florida.To honor his friendship and service with,Captain Cone,Edmund gave the honorary middle name of,Cone to a daughter, Mary Catherine Cone Smith who was born during the war.Edmund Mathis Smith furnished his own horse and equipment valued at $185.00.The Company muster rolls from Nov 14 1861 though Apr. 30,1862 showed him present and that he had received no pay.Company muster from Apr.30 though Dec. 1,1862 shows that he had resigned his commission at Camp Hill,Tennessee on Jul. 16 1862.Regimental Returns for January and February 1862 show him stationed at Camp May Davis,then returning for March 1862.He also is shown stationed at Camp Langford.A pay voucher numbered 76 and dated May 3,1862 shows he was paid $501.00 covering his service from Nov 14 1861 though Apr.30,1862.On Aug 12,1862 in Lake City Florida he enlists as a First Sergeant in, Captain Charles F. Cone's Company G,5th Battalion,Florida Cavalry,(also known as Captain Cone's Independent Company,Florida Cavalry).Edmunds other brother in law,Corprol Levi Luther Lee serves under him in Company G,5th Battalion,Florida Cavalry.Levi was the other brother of,Edmunds wife,Mary Anna Lee.Corprol Levi Luther Lee died Aug 14,1864 making the ultimate sacrifice defending the Rebal cause.Edmund's wife Mary Lee's other brother,1st Lt Wiley Henry Lee,mentioned earlier,had previously served with,Edmund Mathis Smith in Company E,1st Florida Cavalry.On May 18,1865,Lake City Florida,Edmond Mathis Smith was mustered out or paroled as a 2nd Sergeant from the above mentioned 5th Battalion of Captain Charles F. Cone's Company when the company surrendered.

After the War Edmond Mathis Smith served as State Representative for Hamilton County for the State of Florida Legislature's 1889 session.His father John Giles Smith had served in the same position for the 1850 Legislative session for Hamilton County.In 1903 and 1905 Edmond's oldest son, John Lee Smith served in the Florida Legislature for Hamilton County as well.

Edmond Mathis Smith died on Oct 5,1897 in Jennings Florida and was laid to rest in the Smith Family enclosure,pictured here,at Sasser Landing Cemetery in Jennings Florida.He preceded his wife in death by two years, his wife Mary Anna Lee Smith died on Aug 21 1900 and is buried beside him at Sasser's Landing Cemetery.Their daughter, Hattie Harriett Smith Johns is buried next to them.
