Arnold John Krog
Arnold John Krog, who farmed for 50 years in Ash Lake and Diamond Lake townships before moving to Ivanhoe, did on Oct. 27 at age 80. Mr. Krog was born Feb 7, 1920, to Hannah and Johan Krog in Diamond Lake Township. He attended District 16 country school and then enrolled in the West Central School of Agriculture in Morris. Minn., where he graduated in 1939.
He married Aletta Mae Gacke, daughter of Helena and Carl Gacke in 1941. They have four children: Marcia, Kathleen, Brian and Colin.
During World War II, Mr. Krog served in the 9th Bomb Group, 20th Air Force of the Army Air Corps. He took basic training in B-25 School at Sheppard Field in Wichita Falls, Texas, and then was sent to the Air Force School of Applied Tactics, Orlando, Fla., first as a student, then as an instructor. He was next sent on detached service to Alamogordo, NM, to McCook Air Base in Nebraska, and then to attend B-29 School in Seattle, WA.
The Air Force then sent Mr. Krog back to McCook, and on to San Francisco. Hawaii and Johnson Island, Tarawa and Kwajalein in the Pacific Front. He was promoted to master sergeant and stationed on the island of Tinian in February, 1945, where he served as crew chief of as B-29 that flew two missions against Iwo Jima and one search mission and 42 missions over the Japanese mainland.
Mr. Krog was a holder of the Bronze Star.
He is survived by his wife Aletta; children Marcia Copeland, Kathleen and Brian Krog; seven grandsons; three great-grandchildren, and brothers Howard and Leon Krog.
